Marsa Alam Holidays
Holidays to Marsa Alam serve up everything you’d expect of a Red Sea resort – white sandy beaches, top-notch diving and legendary daytrips but it’s a little quieter than many, which gives it a nice away-from-it-all vibe, too. The resort of Marsa Alam is set on the east coast of Egypt, right by the Red Sea, it’s a fast-growing place but it’s still not quite up to speed with the likes of Hurghada. Which is pretty good news, actually. Because what you get here is a bit of an out-of-the-way location with some first-rate hotels. The spotless beaches are camera-ready. Egypt’s most southerly resort, Marsa Alam is also one of the Red Sea’s newest. There are over 50km of unspoiled coastline with palm trees and soft white beaches that give an almost tropical feel. The pristine coral reefs and their abundance of colourful wildlife are a draw for divers and snorkelers alike. Add world class water sports and it really is a go-to destination for those in the know. The tranquil atmosphere and unspoilt environment make it perfect for rest and relaxation and there’s a growing choice of luxury hotels to help you enjoy that perfect getaway.
Beach Life
When it comes to the beach, most of the hotels here have bagged their own stretch. They usually come with beach bars, restaurants and sun loungers, and always powdery white sand. Scuba diving and snorkelling are major events – you’re in real Finding Nemo territory, with the odd hammerhead shark!
Things To See & Do
Snorkelling: Grab your mask and explore the house reef from the local jetty, snorkel from the shore at Abu Dabab beach or take one of the host of local snorkelling trips that take you to best spots to experience Marsa Alam's vivid coral landscapes or catch a glimpse of dolphins, dugongs and turtles.
Visit Cleopatra's mine, explore the carved columns and abandoned mineshafts of the pharaohs' ancient emerald mine, explore El Quseir
Enjoy a day of sightseeing and souvenir shopping in the historic city of El Quseir, just north of Marsa ALam. It's famous for its winding streets, Ottoman fort and ancient souk.
Visiting the Valley of the Camels: The out-of-the-way location may be part of Marsa Alam's appeal, but there are daytrip options that aren’t much more than an hour away. Queseir is one of them – a 4,000-year-old town with an Ottoman fort, as well as Roman and Egyptian ruins to root around and then there’s a national park called the Valley of the Camels, where, not altogether unsurprisingly, you can ride a camel. Treks last around 45 minutes and, afterwards, you can try some camel cheese.
Port Ghalib: Slightly north of Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib is an exclusive marina development. The tree-lined corniche stretches for almost a kilometre and has more than 100 upmarket shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. There’s even a traditional bazaar. You’ll find one of the world’s largest man-made swimming lagoons tucked between the Siva Port Ghalib Resort and the The Palace Port Ghalib.
