The arrival of Wizz Air’s British subsidiary, formed to retain full access to the UK market after Brexit, will create 40 direct jobs and another 250 indirect jobs. The company will hold an open recruitment day in order to select flight and cabin crew to be based in the city of Cardiff.

The Welsh capital’s airport thus becomes its fourth hub in the UK, in addition to London-Luton, London-Gatwick and Doncaster-Sheffield. From there, it will offer flights to nine international destinations, including Egypt.

“We’re already seeing very strong demand from Cardiff,” Wizz Air UK Marion Geoffroy told Routes.

“People in the catchment area want to fly from the airport. They don’t want to travel one, two or three hours to catch a flight if they have the opportunity to select the airport of their choice.”

The launch of the Cardiff base marks Wizz Air’s first venture into Wales. The expansion will increase annual capacity at the airport by more than 330,000 seats.

CWL CEO Spencer Birns said Wizz Air’s entry “marks a real turning point for the airport in its post-COVID revival plans.”

He added: “Our customers in Wales have been asking for a more cost-effective choice for many years.”
